Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump met on June 17 on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France. It was their first face-to-face meeting in 16 months. Trade, energy security and the situation in West Asia were the main focus of the talks. Before the formal meeting, the two leaders exchanged a warm handshake. They also interacted briefly during the summit proceedings. The meeting came at a time when both countries are looking to deepen cooperation while addressing a few outstanding issues.

The talks were closely watched in diplomatic circles. They followed months of discussions on trade tariffs, visa concerns and global economic uncertainties. The meeting was seen as an opportunity to give fresh momentum to India-U.S. relations. Trade figured prominently in the discussions. Both leaders reviewed progress on a proposed bilateral trade agreement. They also discussed ways to resolve tariff-related issues. The aim is to expand economic cooperation and increase two-way trade.

The situation in West Asia also came up during the talks. According to reports, Prime Minister Modi raised concerns over the deaths of Indian seafarers during recent military operations in the Gulf region. He stressed the need to protect civilian lives. He also underlined the importance of keeping global shipping routes safe and secure. Energy security was another key subject. Ongoing tensions in the region have affected global supply chains and oil markets. Both leaders discussed ways to strengthen long-term energy cooperation. Stable energy supplies remain important for both countries.

Maritime security was also discussed. The two leaders emphasized the need for secure sea lanes. They supported uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels through key international waterways, including the Gulf region. Media reports said President Trump spoke positively about his relationship with Prime Minister Modi. He also expressed confidence about future trade cooperation between the two countries.

No major agreement was announced after the meeting. However, the talks highlighted the importance both countries attach to their strategic partnership. As global challenges continue to evolve, India and the United States signalled their intention to remain engaged on trade, energy and security issues in the months ahead.
