An investment pitch made during Madhya Pradesh's "Invest in MP" roadshow in the United Kingdom in 2024 has now turned into a major industrial project on the ground. On June 8, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav virtually performed the groundbreaking ceremony for Haleon Group's first manufacturing unit in India at Pithampur in Dhar district, marking another milestone in the state's efforts to attract global investment and strengthen its position as a leading manufacturing hub.
The project, backed by an investment of nearly Rs 2,000 crore, is expected to create around 1,000 jobs and strengthen the state's fast-growing pharmaceutical and healthcare manufacturing sector. The unit is being established after nearly 18 months of discussions between the company and the state government, highlighting how Madhya Pradesh's investment push is beginning to convert proposals into large industrial projects.
Addressing the virtual ceremony, Dr. Yadav said India has emerged as the "Pharmacy of the World" under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that the country is no longer viewed merely as a large consumer market but also as a trusted manufacturing destination and an important partner in global supply chains. The Chief Minister said Madhya Pradesh is steadily strengthening its position in India's pharmaceutical and healthcare manufacturing ecosystem. According to him, the state's investor-friendly policies and growing industrial infrastructure are attracting global companies looking for long-term expansion opportunities.
He described Haleon's decision to establish its first Indian manufacturing unit in Madhya Pradesh as a vote of confidence in the state's industrial potential. He assured investors that the government would provide support at every stage, from project approvals to production. The project is also expected to strengthen women's participation in the industrial workforce. The company has set a target of providing nearly 30 percent of jobs to women. Dr. Yadav said the move aligns with the state's efforts toward women empowerment and inclusive growth.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister expressed hope that Haleon's investment in Madhya Pradesh would grow far beyond the initial Rs 2,000 crore. He said the government would work closely with the company to create conditions for future expansion. The investment has roots in the state's international investment campaign. Officials said the project originated from discussions held during the "Invest in MP" roadshow in the United Kingdom in 2024. What began as an investment proposal has now transformed into a large-scale industrial project in Pithampur.
Official release quoted Haleon CEO Brian as saying that the company was delighted to launch its first Indian manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh. He described India as one of the world's fastest-growing economies and called Madhya Pradesh one of the country's most rapidly emerging industrial states. The company has already committed about £175 million to the project and plans further expansion in the future. Company representatives reportedly said the new facility is being developed over more than 40 acres inside the Pithampur Smart Industrial Park. It will primarily manufacture oral healthcare products and will serve not only the Indian market but also export destinations across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.
Haleon is among the world's leading consumer healthcare companies, operating in more than 170 countries. Its portfolio includes oral healthcare, digestive health, pain relief, respiratory care, vitamins and nutritional supplements.
The project is expected to create opportunities beyond the factory gates as well. Local MSMEs, suppliers, transport operators and logistics companies are likely to benefit from the arrival of a major global manufacturer. For Madhya Pradesh, the investment is another sign that its ambition of becoming a leading pharmaceutical and export hub is steadily turning into reality.
