During a visit to L&T's Hazira complex, PM Modi highlighted India's advancements in nuclear engineering, viewing a 700 MWe nuclear steam generator critical to India's energy strategy.

While much public attention has focused on India's advances in defence manufacturing, another strategic milestone quietly unfolded at Larsen & Toubro's (L&T) Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited one of the country's most sophisticated engineering facilities recently. During the visit, the Prime Minister viewed a 700 MWe nuclear steam generator, one of the most complex components used in India's indigenous nuclear power programme.
The massive cylindrical equipment, manufactured by L&T for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), is designed for India's fleet of indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). It represents a significant step in India's effort to build critical nuclear infrastructure using domestic engineering capabilities under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Far less visible than missiles or fighter aircraft, a nuclear steam generator is often described as the heart of a nuclear power plant. Inside a reactor, heat released during controlled nuclear fission is transferred through thousands of precision-engineered tubes inside the steam generator. The system converts ordinary water into high-pressure steam that drives electricity-generating turbines while ensuring radioactive material remains completely isolated from the secondary circuit.
In simple terms, it transfers heat-not radiation-making it one of the most safety-critical components in a nuclear reactor.
Manufacturing such equipment is regarded as one of the highest achievements in heavy engineering. Each steam generator weighs hundreds of tonnes and must meet extraordinarily demanding quality standards, with precision measured in fractions of a millimetre while ensuring reliable operation for decades under extreme temperatures and pressure. Only a handful of countries possess the industrial capability to manufacture such equipment domestically, and India is now among them.
The Hazira complex has emerged as a key manufacturing hub for India's expanding nuclear programme. L&T has been steadily supplying 700 MWe steam generators and other critical reactor components for NPCIL's fleet-mode construction programme, enabling faster execution and greater standardisation across multiple nuclear power projects.
India's fleet-mode strategy is expected to reduce construction costs while accelerating the expansion of clean, round-the-clock electricity generation. Unlike solar and wind power, nuclear plants operate continuously, providing stable base-load power essential for a growing economy. A single 700 MWe reactor can generate enough electricity to serve millions of households while producing virtually no carbon emissions during operation.
The programme is also creating a large industrial ecosystem. Companies such as L&T, BHEL and several specialised engineering firms are manufacturing high-value equipment within the country, supporting thousands of direct and indirect jobs while strengthening India's strategic manufacturing base.
India currently operates 24 nuclear reactors with an installed capacity of around 8.8 GW, while another 11 reactors are under construction, expected to add nearly 8.7 GW. The country is also advancing its Fast Breeder Reactor programme alongside the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as part of its long-term energy strategy. The Government has set an ambitious target of expanding nuclear generation capacity to around 100 GW by 2047, making indigenous reactor technology central to India's future energy security.
During his visit to the Hazira facility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed several indigenous engineering projects and praised L&T's contribution to strengthening India's self-reliance in strategic manufacturing. Sharing photographs from the visit, he described the company's role in advancing India's indigenous capabilities as commendable.
In addition to the equipment or the complexity of its engineering, the steam generator symbolises something larger. It reflects India's ability to design and manufacture some of the world's most sophisticated industrial systems at home, a capability that supports not only clean energy generation but also strengthens the country's long-term technological and strategic independence.
