Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav on Thursday described the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, as one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history and paid tribute to those who stood against what he called an attack on democratic values.

In a message posted on social media to mark the anniversary of the Emergency, Dr Yadav said the decision taken by the then Indira Gandhi government reflected political arrogance and pushed the country into an extraordinary phase that tested the strength of its democratic institutions. "The Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, was the darkest day in the history of democracy in the country," the Chief Minister said. He paid his "humble respects" to the defenders of democracy who, despite difficult circumstances, remained steadfast in protecting constitutional principles and democratic freedoms.

Dr Yadav also called upon people to renew their commitment to safeguarding democracy. He urged citizens to remain dedicated to protecting democratic values and continue serving the nation, saying the sacrifices made during that period should continue to inspire future generations.

The Emergency remained in force for 21 months, from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977. During this period, civil liberties were curtailed, press censorship was imposed and several opposition leaders, activists and journalists were detained under preventive detention laws. The period continues to be one of the most debated chapters in independent India's political history.

The Bharatiya Janata Party observes June 25 as a reminder of the Emergency and frequently recalls the imprisonment of opposition leaders and restrictions placed on democratic rights during that period. The Congress, however, has maintained that the Emergency must be viewed in the context of the political and administrative challenges facing the country at the time.

Dr Yadav's remarks came as political leaders across the country marked the anniversary by remembering those who resisted the Emergency and reiterating the need to protect constitutional institutions, democratic freedoms and the rule of law.
