PM Modi, Japan PM Takaichi Hold Summit Talks to Deepen Strategic Partnership

India's PM Narendra Modi and Japan's PM Sanae Takaichi met in New Delhi to enhance their Strategic and Global Partnership, discussing a range of bilateral and global issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held bilateral talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Thursday. The meeting comes as India and Japan seek to further strengthen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. The two leaders met after Prime Minister Takaichi was accorded a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Modi received his Japanese counterpart and introduced her to members of the Union Cabinet and senior officials.

S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior officials from both countries attended the bilateral talks. In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the meeting was taking forward a partnership anchored in trust, shared values and strategic convergence. In another post, the Ministry described India-Japan ties as “a partnership for the future, built on trust and rooted in shared values.”

According to agency reports, Prime Minister Takaichi is on a three-day official visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi. The visit is her first official trip to India since assuming office. It also comes ahead of the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. The summit is expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation. The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

Ahead of the summit, Japan's Cabinet Public Relations Office thanked India for the warm reception extended to the visiting delegation. In a post on X, it said it was excited to visit India. In another post after the ceremonial reception, it said Prime Minister Takaichi would hold summit talks with Prime Minister Modi.

Takaichi had described India as an increasingly important strategic partner in an evolving global environment. She said India and Japan, as two major democracies in Asia, share a responsibility to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. She expressed her intention to discuss the vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, including cooperation under the Quad framework. The summit is expected to conclude with a joint statement outlining the next phase of cooperation between the two countries. Several agreements are also expected in areas such as economic security, emerging technologies, resilient supply chains, defence and investment.
