The BJP on Tuesday observed the Balidan Diwas (sacrifice day) of Bhartiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee across Madhya Pradesh, with programmes held from the state headquarters in Bhopal to booth-level units across districts. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav and BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal paid homage to Dr Mookerjee and highlighted his contribution to national unity and public life.
Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee is remembered as the founder of the Bhartiya Jana Sangh, the political organisation that later evolved into the BJP. He died on June 23, 1953, while under detention in Jammu and Kashmir during a movement against the special constitutional arrangements that existed in the state at the time. His sacrifice day is observed annually by the BJP and its affiliated organisations.
Addressing party workers, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav said Mookerjee’s thoughts and sacrifice continue to inspire the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. He described him as a leader who dedicated his life to protecting national unity and sovereignty. Referring to the period of Partition, the Chief Minister said Mookerjee strongly opposed efforts that could have resulted in a larger part of West Bengal becoming part of Pakistan and played an important role in safeguarding the region’s place within India.
Dr Yadav said Mookerjee’s struggle was not confined to electoral politics. He said the Jana Sangh founder worked to strengthen national identity and public consciousness at a time of major political challenges facing the country. He also recalled Mookerjee’s famous opposition to separate constitutional and administrative arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir, a movement that eventually became one of the defining chapters of his political life.
The Chief Minister said Mookerjee’s commitment to national integration continued to influence public discourse decades after his death. He noted that the removal of Article 370 by the Union government was often viewed by BJP leaders as a step aligned with the ideals for which Mookerjee had campaigned.
BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal described Mookerjee as a nationalist thinker, educationist and visionary leader whose sacrifice remains a source of inspiration for party workers. He said Mookerjee laid the ideological foundation of the Jana Sangh, which later grew into the BJP. According to Khandelwal, Mookerjee’s life carried the message that national interest must remain above all other considerations.
Khandelwal also called upon younger generations to learn about Mookerjee’s contribution to the country and his commitment to national unity. He said remembering such leaders was important for understanding the evolution of India’s political and democratic journey.

Several senior BJP leaders, including Cabinet Minister Vishvas Sarang, Rajya Sabha MP Rajneesh Agrawal, former Union minister Suresh Pachouri, MLA Rameshwar Sharma and MLA Bhagwandas Sabnani, attended the Bhopal programme along with party office-bearers and workers.
With tribute events held across thousands of booths in Madhya Pradesh, BJP leaders said the observance was aimed at taking Mookerjee’s ideas and legacy to grassroots workers while remembering his role in shaping the party’s ideological foundations and his sacrifice for causes he believed were linked to national unity.
