In a major relief for thousands of police personnel and their families, the Madhya Pradesh Police has moved to strengthen its health security system with wider medical support, faster treatment access and higher financial assistance during medical emergencies. A high-level meeting of the Madhya Pradesh Police Health Protection Scheme (PHPS) Trust Board was held in Bhopal under the chairmanship of Director General of Police Kailash Makwana on Wednesday. The meeting focused on making healthcare facilities for police personnel more practical, humane and accessible.

Addressing senior officers, the DGP said police personnel remain on duty round the clock to maintain law and order and protect citizens. Therefore, ensuring their health security and family welfare remains one of the top priorities of the police organisation. Officials discussed several important reforms to make the scheme more sensitive to present-day requirements. The proposals included easier treatment procedures, wider cashless medical facilities, support during emergency situations and better coverage for serious illnesses.

One of the biggest decisions taken during the meeting was related to emergency treatment during life-threatening situations. Under the new proposal, police personnel suffering from heart attack, serious road accidents or other critical emergencies will be allowed cashless treatment even in non-empanelled private hospitals until their condition becomes stable. The meeting also decided to increase medical financial support in severe illness and duty-related injury cases. Police personnel injured during law-and-order deployment, criminal investigations, vehicle accidents or violent incidents on duty would receive enhanced assistance. Serious diseases like cancer, kidney transplant, liver transplant and open-heart surgery have also been included for expanded support.

Officials said that after regular medical reimbursement, the remaining treatment cost could now be fully covered through the PHPS fund. The proposed maximum financial assistance has been increased up to Rs 14 lakh. Support would also be available in cases of coma and paralysis. The police department also took a socially sensitive decision for compassionate appointment employees. A proposal would be sent to the government to extend health scheme benefits to dependent younger siblings and differently-abled family members dependent on such employees.

The meeting further stressed expanding the network of empanelled private hospitals across the state so that police personnel can access cashless treatment near their home districts. At present, the scheme is linked with 59 hospitals, including 55 hospitals within Madhya Pradesh and four outside the state. Unit heads were directed to coordinate with more recognised hospitals locally.

The DGP also instructed officers to ensure quick disposal of pending medical reimbursement and treatment bills so that police families do not suffer unnecessary delays during difficult times. Senior police officers, including Adarsh Katiyar, A. Sai Manohar and other officials attended the meeting.
