Madhya Pradesh has successfully completed the first phase of Census 2027. The large-scale house listing and housing census exercise concluded on May 30, marking a major milestone in the country's census programme. The field work began on May 1 and covered every village and urban area across the state. Enumerators visited households door-to-door and collected information through a mobile application. The survey focused on 33 questions notified by the Government of India. These questions related to the condition of houses, basic amenities available to families and household assets. For the first time, the entire exercise was conducted through a fully digital system. Data collection, monitoring and progress tracking were carried out through online platforms and dedicated portals. Officials said the digital approach helped improve both the speed and quality of the operation.
According to reports the exercise was one of the largest administrative surveys undertaken in the state. It covered all 55 districts, 425 urban local bodies, 449 tehsils and nearly 54,923 villages. More than 1.44 lakh enumerators and supervisors were deployed across over 1.37 lakh house-listing blocks. An additional 15,000 personnel were kept on reserve to ensure smooth implementation. Officials said the work was completed within the stipulated timeline with active support from district administrations, census officers, supervisors, enumerators and citizens.
Before the field exercise began, Madhya Pradesh had also conducted a self-enumeration campaign between April 16 and April 30. The initiative witnessed encouraging public participation. More than seven lakh families voluntarily submitted their information online, reflecting growing acceptance of digital governance and citizen-driven data collection.
Authorities have assured residents that all personal information collected during the census will remain strictly confidential. The data is protected under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990. Officials clarified that the information will be used only for policy planning and welfare programmes. The final data will be released by the Government of India after the completion of the entire census process.
The next and more crucial stage of Census 2027 will begin in February 2027. During this phase, known as Population Enumeration, detailed demographic information of every family member will be collected. Officials also acknowledged the role played by print, electronic and digital media in spreading awareness about the census. According to the Census Directorate, widespread public outreach helped improve participation and ensure the successful completion of this nationally important exercise.
The Director of Census Operations, Madhya Pradesh, thanked citizens across the state for their cooperation and expressed confidence that similar support would continue during the second phase of Census 2027 next year.
