A renewed spirit of cooperative federalism and shared cultural heritage marked the Madhya Pradesh–Uttar Pradesh Cooperation Conference held in Varanasi on Tuesday. The high-level meet brought together Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, ministers from Uttar Pradesh, and senior officials from both states to deliberate on economic collaboration, religious tourism, MSME growth, and employment generation. At the heart of the conference were key agreements aimed at strengthening institutional and economic ties. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust and the Mahakaleshwar Temple Trust, as well as between the two states to promote the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative—an effort to boost local crafts and industries.

Addressing the gathering, CM Dr Yadav underlined that Madhya Pradesh offers “limitless investment opportunities,” noting that the state’s exports have already crossed ₹70,000 crore. He emphasized that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, India is steadily progressing towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy. He also praised Uttar Pradesh’s governance model under Yogi Adityanath, highlighting improvements in law and order alongside rapid development.

Referring to Kashi Vishwanath Dham as one of the world’s most sacred sites, Yadav called the conference a reflection of India’s spiritual and developmental synergy. He also credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the decisive push against Left-wing extremism, asserting that Madhya Pradesh has now become Naxal-free.

Shared Heritage, Shared Growth; Highlighting the deep cultural ties between the two states, Yadav drew parallels between Varanasi and Ujjain-both the ancient cities with immense religious significance. He pointed to the transformation of the Mahakal Lok as a major boost to spiritual tourism in Madhya Pradesh. He also referenced mythological links—Lord Ram’s time in Chitrakoot along the Mandakini river, and Lord Krishna’s education in Ujjain after slaying Kansa—as symbolic of the enduring cultural bridge between the two states.

Joint Development Initiatives; The conference highlighted several collaborative projects, including the Ken-Betwa River Linking Project, expected to benefit the Bundelkhand regions of both states through irrigation and drinking water supply. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are jointly working on a 2,000 MW solar power project in Morena, signaling a push towards renewable energy.

Officials also shared insights on large-scale religious event management. The Madhya Pradesh delegation studied arrangements at Varanasi and Prayagraj, particularly the management of the Kumbh, to prepare for the upcoming Simhastha in Ujjain.

Industrial Growth and Policy Push; Dr Yadav highlighted that irrigation coverage in Madhya Pradesh has expanded to 5.5 million hectares and that the number of medical colleges has risen to 40. In a significant policy push, the state is offering up to 30 acres of land on a ₹1 lease for setting up hospitals, alongside subsidies of up to 50% for farmers under various welfare schemes.

Uttar Pradesh’s Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta (Nandi) described the conference as a reflection of deepening ties, noting that the ODOP programme has given a distinct identity to local artisans and crafts. He added that over 1.63 lakh youth have been supported with financial assistance exceeding ₹6,000 crore to promote entrepreneurship. Senior officials highlighted that Uttar Pradesh’s exports have grown from ₹88,000 crore in 2017 to ₹1.86 lakh crore in 2024, with ODOP contributing nearly 50%. The state also boasts 96 lakh MSME units, the highest in the country, driving an investment-led transformation.

Cultural Showcase and Craft Exhibition; An exhibition showcasing traditional crafts and ODOP products from both states added a vibrant cultural dimension to the event. Artisans displayed bamboo crafts, metal works, textiles, and jute products, reflecting the rich heritage and skill base of the region. From Varanasi’s famed zari work, wooden crafts, and glass bead products to Madhya Pradesh’s Maheshwari handlooms, Chanderi sarees, bamboo crafts from Rewa, and metalwork from Betul, the exhibition provided a shared platform for artisans and highlighted the economic potential of traditional industries. CM Yadav toured the exhibition and interacted with artisans, reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting grassroots entrepreneurship and cultural industries. The conference ultimately underscored a broader vision—of two culturally rich states leveraging their shared legacy to drive economic growth, strengthen regional cooperation, and create new opportunities for their people.
