New Delhi/Shahdol, May 7, 2026. The success story of football aspirants from the remote tribal-dominated village of Vicharpur is now set to receive national attention with a special screening of a documentary by DD Sports in the national capital on May 7. The documentary captures the journey of village children who recently trained under German coach Dietmar Beiersdorfer, associated with FC Ingolstadt. Their hard work and determination have raised hopes that some of them could one day play for the country. The inspiring journey also reminds many of popular sports-based films such as Jhund, Chak De! India, Lagaan and 83 among others.

The initiative began in 2023 when former IAS officer Rajiv Sharma took voluntary retirement from his post as Divisional Commissioner and decided to work for the development of football at the grassroots level. With this vision, he started the Football Kranti Foundation to encourage children from remote and underprivileged areas to take up the sport. Sharma believes that Madhya Pradesh has a large pool of hidden football talent, especially in tribal and rural regions, but young players often lack proper training, guidance and sports infrastructure. Through the foundation, thousands of children from different districts have now been introduced to organised football coaching and regular practice sessions.

Grassroots initiative led by former bureaucrat; What started as a small grassroots effort in a remote village has gradually turned into an inspiring success story. The initiative has not only created sporting opportunities for children but has also boosted their confidence and widened their dreams. Many young players who once had little exposure beyond their villages are now getting professional-level training and national attention, showing how sports can positively transform lives and communities.

Observers claim the Football in Vicharpur has grown through passion and dedication despite limited facilities and resources. The sport has been part of village life for nearly four generations. Its journey began in the 1980s when local residents Murli Dhar Kunde and Suresh Kunde started informally training children and encouraging them to play football. For years, young players practised on open village grounds, learning the game from senior players and local coaches. Without modern facilities, the village still managed to nurture several talented footballers who later went on to compete at state and national levels. Coach Rais Khan has also played an important role in guiding and developing local talent over the years. The state government has recognised the growing football culture and achievements of Vicharpur and approved nearly Rs 6 crore for the development of sports infrastructure in the area. The support is expected to strengthen the village’s identity as an emerging football hub in Madhya Pradesh and provide better facilities for young players to train and grow.

Expansion beyond Shahdol; The Football Kranti Foundation has expanded its activities beyond Shahdol to districts such as Bhind, Mandla, Umaria and Raisen. Sharma said that over 2,000 football clubs are currently active across Madhya Pradesh, indicating rising participation among youth. The initiative is also focusing on improving technical training and gameplay understanding among young players. Observers note that such grassroots programmes could contribute to strengthening the state’s sports ecosystem over the long term. The Vicharpur initiative highlights how decentralised efforts, combined with institutional support, can help identify and nurture talent from non-traditional regions.

The documentary screening will take place at the Rang Bhavan Auditorium, All India Radio, Delhi, and is expected to be attended by former IAS officer Rajiv Sharma and coach Rais Khan. The development is notable given that Vicharpur lacks a formal sports ecosystem or dedicated football academy. The initiative gained wider visibility after Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the village’s football talent during a speech in the United States, following which the German coach invited the children for training.
