Tension gripped the Panpatha range of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve early Sunday morning after the death of a tiger triggered violent protests by villagers and outsiders. What began as anger over the mysterious death of the big cat soon turned chaotic. Forest vehicles were vandalised. Officials were chased and attacked with sticks. Several forest personnel, including a ranger, woman deputy ranger and a jeep driver, suffered injuries during the violence. All were rushed to a nearby hospital. Officials later confirmed that their condition remained stable. According to sources, the situation escalated rapidly as large groups gathered near the forest area soon after news of the tiger’s death spread. Videos shown to Swadesh, though not publicly shared, reportedly captured disturbing scenes. Young men were allegedly seen laughing and joking even as attacks on forest officials unfolded nearby. This has now raised serious suspicion within official circles that the violence may not have been entirely spontaneous.

Officials privately suspect that organised elements may have tried to exploit public anger to target the forest department deliberately. Insiders believe the possibility of a larger conspiracy behind the unrest cannot be ruled out. Some suspect that forces opposed to the ongoing cultural resurgence and stronger action against urban extremist networks may be attempting to exploit sensitive wildlife incidents to create public disorder and mistrust in remote forest regions. The presence of senior officers, including the Inspector General and Divisional Commissioner, at the location has further strengthened speculation that authorities had inputs about possible trouble.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the tiger’s death has deepened further. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Sameeta Rajora dismissed reports claiming that the tiger died due to an overdose of tranquiliser. She said such conclusions were premature and not supported by facts at this stage. According to her, the tiger showed no visible signs of violent reaction when the tranquiliser dart was fired from a rooftop during the rescue operation. She also pointed towards the dart mark found below the neck, saying the animal had remained almost motionless at that time. Dr. Rajora confirmed that a second post-mortem examination would now be conducted at School of Wildlife Medicine and Forensic in Jabalpur. Officials say the final report will determine the exact cause of death.
